Our owner, Marcus Stout, drinks a lot of tea. He actually drinks so much that sometimes we think he may start sprouting leaves! And no matter what day it is, he always starts his morning with Sinharaja. This rich black tea is not only one of Marcus’ favorites, but it was also named the #1 tea by the food critics at Gayot. Sinharaja has everything you want in a strong black tea. It is smooth, rich, complex, and can stand up to milk. In fact, that is how Marcus drinks this tea. With 2% milk and a dollop of honey.

Pure Black Tea Grown Bordering the Sinharaja Rainforest

The tea farm we chose for Sinharaja is situated near Ratnapura, the fabled ‘City of Gems,’ in the heart of the low country planting district of Sri Lanka. The factory is perched on a hill overlooking the world famous Sinharaja rainforest. The rainforest provides tons of nutrients to the soil, which provide lush tea leaves that are filled with nutrients. This strategic location, combined with favorable climatic conditions gives Sinharaja the special mellow character that sets it apart from others.

I was skeptical about a tea named after a rainforest, but this one's got a malty backbone that holds up even if you forget it steeping for six or seven minutes. It's become my default morning cup, and I say that as someone with a cupboard full of half-finished boxes.

The first sip has that deep, earthy warmth that just settles you into the day—I’ve been reaching for it every single morning since it arrived. It brews up a rich, dark cup that feels like a proper ritual rather than a quick caffeine fix, and the leaves hold their flavor even on a second steep.

I'm not much of a morning person, but this tea has become my non-negotiable first sip of the day. The leaves brew up a deep, steady cup that feels made for slow, quiet starts. Even the owner apparently can't get through a day without it, and now I get why.
